I have heard this one a million different ways. Clients will often say, “I heard that meta descriptions can help or hurt you on Google.” Nope, sorry.

Google even said so themselves – meta descriptions are not used as a ranking factor. Now, typically, you have to read between the lines when Google says anything about SEO, but this one is something that everything has agreed on. They aren’t using for ranking purposes. They are, however, really important for click through rates. In other words, having something catchy will make people more apt to visit your website.
