Don’t Try to Automate Your Internal Linking

Another great find in the last few months is that Google is targeting websites that overdo it on internal links. But I don’t just mean having a bunch of internal links.

A lot of people are setting up programs that will automatically insert links into their websites (both internally and externally),  that links back to their optimized pages with perfect anchor text. What does that mean? It means that every single link they create is pointing back to their pages is a perfect keyword. Links don’t work like this. If you see a link in someone’s website that has descriptive text, you can deem the link relevant and useful. If you see a link that just has a keyword in it, why would you click on it? That’s Google’s rationale too. Why should they give you a boost because they see a bunch of links that were automatically created instead of created for readers? Don’t try to automate your internal linking.

How do I build effective internal links?

The best thing that you can do is to build internal links that give the reader a reason to click on it and give a general idea of what’s on the other side of the link. The easiest way to do that is to begin using full phrases in your links that describe the target page. For example, I want to link to Google, and let everyone know what’s on the other side of my link. Hover over this link for a tooltip too!

Find what you’re looking for by using Google!

Keep that in mind the next time you build a link in your blog posts. Be descriptive!
