Boost Your Web Traffic With Twitter

Last week I gave you some ideas about how you can boost web traffic with design. This week I would like to talk about boosting your web traffic with Twitter. There are plenty of Twitter guides out there, so I won’t bore you with another “how to use Twitter” tutorial. What I am going to do, however, is give you three important concepts surrounding Twitter that you can use to drive traffic to your site.

1. Twitter Allows You to Broadcast to a Huge Audience
After you have built your Twitter following you can start driving traffic to your website. If you have 2000-5000 followers you can expect to get 50-300 clicks to your site with each link you post. (If you aren’t using a URL shortener that allows you to track your clicks it is well worth it.) This assumes that you are offering valuable content with your tweets. Abuse your tweets with too much self promotion and people will stop following you. Since these people have essentially subscribed to your tweets, those 50 clicks should be very qualified leads.

2. Twitter Allows You to Communicate One-On-One
Just as important as the broad net you can cast with Twitter is the ability to communicate directly with customers one-on-one. You can use Twitter to follow people who are tweeting about your business, your competitors, your industry, and any other keyword that might concern you. You can respond directly to these people and produce strong relationships with your customers. This won’t drive traffic to your site in massive numbers, but you can be sure that these visitors are very strong leads.

3. Google is Watching Twitter
You have probably done a search on Google recently and found Twitter near the top of the results. Google is making some changes that favor real-time results. This trend is helping boost Twitter in the rankings. Much like the boost that blogs got from Google in the last few years, Twitter is also surging. Being active on Twitter doesn’t necessarily help your site appear higher in the search engines, but you can take advantage of Twitter’s Google dominance if you are actively twittering.

Obviously this is just scratching the surface of Twitter, but I hope this gives you some insight into how it is possible to view Twitter as a legitimate source of traffic for your website.
